Sedation Dentistry 101

November 14, 2017

It’s perfectly acceptable – and even fine – to be nervous about dental appointments. If you’re going in for a filling or root canal, it’s normal to be a bit nervous.

What’s not normal, however, is to let those nervous feelings prevent you from getting the oral health care you need to keep your teeth in the best possible shape.

That’s why our team here at Portland Dental in Portland, Oregon, offers sedation dentistry to our patients.

What is it?

Sedation dentistry is exactly what it sounds like – it’s the process of performing necessary dental procedures on a patient who’s sedated. The sedation allows a patient to relax and enjoy their experience at the dentist’s office, instead of dreading the entire appointment.

How does it work?

Depending on the level of your anxiety about the dentist, as well as the procedure being performed, Dr. Kaveen will likely recommend a few different treatment options. The options range from laughing gas (nitrous oxide) to two different levels of IV sedatives, to general anesthesia. You’ll only need general anesthesia for a procedure such as wisdom teeth removal, or if you’re really nervous, a root canal.

If you’re suffering from dental anxiety and need help, call us today at 503-227-1693 to schedule a sedation dentistry appointment so we can help you have the best oral health possible.

Choose a Dental Bridge for Your Smile

November 2, 2017

Those who are missing one or more teeth may experience difficulty with chewing or speaking. A dental bridge in Portland, Oregon, is a great way to restore the beauty and functionality of your smile. A dental bridge replaces a missing tooth or teeth with artificial teeth by bridging the gap caused by missing teeth. A dental bridge is made of a replacement tooth (or teeth) with a dental crown attached on either side. The dental crowns are attached to the teeth on either side of the gap.

Dental Bridge Benefits

A dental bridge can do many things for you and your smile, including:

  • Restore the beauty of your smile
  • Restore the functionality of your smile
  • Preserve the shape of your face
  • Properly distribute your bite
  • Keep your natural teeth from moving out of place
  • Allow you to properly chew and speak again

Types of Bridges

  • Traditional bridge – A crown for the tooth on either side of the gap with a replacement tooth in between. Traditional bridges are the most common type of bridge.
  • Cantilever bridge – Used when there are only adjacent teeth on one side of the missing tooth or teeth. This type of bridge is not commonly used anymore.
  • Maryland bonded bridge – Replacement teeth and gums supported by a framework made of porcelain or metal. Metal or porcelain wings on one or both side of the bridge are bonded to the existing teeth.

We invite you to contact Portland Dental today to learn more and to schedule an appointment with our dentist, Dr. Kaveen.
