Invisalign® combines the effectiveness of time-tested braces with the ease of oral appliance therapy that involves effortlessly slipping special devices in and out of your mouth.
Invisalign® aligns or repositions teeth that are crowded, crooked, gapped, and misaligned. It is also an appropriate alternative to conventional braces for the right patients with bite problems, such as overbite, underbite, open bite, and crossbite.
Portland Dental provides patients across Lake Oswego, Beaverton, and Hillsboro, Oregon, with oral appliances called “aligners.” These devices look similar to retainers, nightguards, and other such appliances that easily fit over the teeth and can be slipped in and out of the mouth. When worn each day for the required time as directed by Dr. Kaveendra Ranasinghe, the aligners place a continual yet gentle force on the teeth. This force initiates a process called “bone remodeling,” allowing new bone to form and secure teeth in their new, aligned positions. Teeth are safely and gradually moved into the healthy placements over time.
Both options are effective. They are based on similar underlying principles. However, how they straighten teeth is different. Braces use brackets, wires, and elastics. This “hardware” must be adjusted by your dentist or orthodontist throughout treatment. They cannot be removed by anyone other than your doctor. For treatment to progress, the braces must be slightly “fine-tuned.” With Invisalign®, you are effectively in the driver’s seat. The aligners are not fixed to the teeth. You simply keep the aligners in your mouth at all times except when brushing and flossing your teeth, cleaning the appliance, and eating. When the aligners are in your mouth, they place continuous and controlled force on the teeth. Dr. Kaveen does not need to make any adjustments.
Yes. However, the number of visits required compares favorably to the “check-ins” needed for conventional orthodontic treatment with braces. During these appointments, Dr. Kaveen examines your teeth. He makes sure your treatment is on track. You will also be provided with more sets of aligners. It is essential to keep all your scheduled professional teeth cleaning appointments as usual. Dr. Kaveen and our team will also advise on the best techniques and products to clean your aligners. Cleaning your aligners prevents stains and harmful bacteria from building up. So, your smile stays beautiful and healthy.
The total number of custom-fitted aligners required to complete your treatment depends on factors such as the type of misalignment we are trying to correct. For instance, you will need fewer aligners if the misalignment is more modest and cosmetic in nature. Those with more extensive bite problems will generally require more aligners to complete treatment. The total number of aligners is also associated with the total treatment time, as each aligner is worn for between one and two weeks. In general, Invisalign® can straighten teeth within a fraction of the time as conventional braces.
